Notodontid Moth Caterpillar (Notodontidae)

The modified rear prolegs of this bizarre caterpillar (possibly Cerura sp.) take the form of twin tails which spin like the tail rotors on a helicopter when the caterpillar feels threatened. This may serve several functions beyond just creating confusion and alarm in a potential predator. They could be mimicking the antennae of a wasp as a deterrent to predation. They might also be used to wave away parasitoid wasps or flies that may be attempting to lay eggs on or in the caterpillar, a genuine concern for many of the local Lepidopteran larvae.

(If you are confused, in the bottom image the head is on the left)
